At the corner of Altenwall and Ostertorstraße an inconspicuous post-war building was demolished. At that place a multistorey modern edifice is being constructed.

The building lot is fenced off. The space for traffic is straitened. The sidewalk/ bikeway and the roadway are separated by a barrier.

To the right you see the half-finished building and some construction material behind the site fence. The site fence (symbolically) protects the construction material against theft and the workers against incautious behaviour and careless traffic participants.

On the left side of the picture you see the narrow combined sidewalk and bikeway. Despite the narrowness cyclists almost never dismount and walk ...

Thr barrier in the middle of the picture protects weaker traffic participants, such as pedestrians and cyclists, against cars.

You may also anticipate that the barrier protects all traffic participants against bold maneuvers.

The roadway is a place where only traffic participants encounter each other who have almost the same power. That's why the lanes are only separated by a road marking.

The international poster organisation Loesje has started a project to train young people from all over Europe and Asia in how to organise and coordinate information campaigns about the Millennium Development Goals. These goals are set by the United Nations to fight poverty and to improve living standards world wide.
